Anne, the second daughter, is 27 and since her first love interest didn’t comply with her father’s expectation, she is celibate. In everyone’s mind, she is to become an old girl… Mary, on the other hand, the youngest one, is already married to Charles Musgrove.

Because of financial troubles, the family moves to Bath. Mary stays near the Uppercross Hall where Anne often visits.

One day, she comes across the wealthy Commandant Frederick Wentworth at her sisters’. He finds out that Mary’s sibling was his first interest and that she still loves him.
