Echoes in the Glass Tower

Anna sat at her desk, eyes fixed on the screen but mind elsewhere. The deadline for the project was days away, yet the tension in the office felt like a heavy fog. Mark, her coworker, had been acting strange—his words twisting just enough to throw her off.

"Did you finish your part already?" Mark asked casually, though Anna noticed the slight edge in his voice. When she replied honestly, he nodded slowly, then said, "Oh, I thought you said you'd have more done by now. But maybe I misunderstood."

These small moments piled up, making Anna doubt herself. Was she missing something, or was Mark deliberately undermining her? The uncertainty gnawed at her confidence. At team meetings, she felt eyes turn away as she tried to speak, her ideas slipping through the cracks.

One evening, Anna stayed late, reviewing emails and conversations between her and Mark. It clicked—he wasn’t just competitive; he’d been planting ideas, twisting words in reports, making her seem unreliable. But then she stopped. What about her own role? Had her growing anxiety made her see threats where there were none?

The next day, Anna confronted Mark gently. "I feel like some things have been misunderstood. Can we clear the air?"

Mark looked surprised, then smiled in a way she hadn’t seen before. "I suppose I've been playing the game a little too hard," he admitted. "But I never meant to break your trust."

In that moment, Anna realized the office wasn’t only a place of rivalry—it was a mirror reflecting her fears as much as his actions. The real battle wasn’t just with Mark, but within herself.
