Heartbeats Off-Key

Today in music class, we tried something new. Our teacher gave us these small devices called biosensors. They showed our heartbeat sounds through headphones, sharing how fast or slow we felt.

I was sitting next to Lily, the girl I like but rarely talk to. We each wore a sensor, hoping to hear each other's heartbeats. It was kind of scary but exciting.

At first, I could hear the quiet beat of her heart mixed with mine. Then, suddenly, her sensor stopped working. I waited, but only silence came through my headphones. I asked, "Did yours stop?" She looked confused and said, "Maybe it's broken?"

The silence felt strange, like she didn’t want to share with me anymore. My heart got heavy. I wondered if this quiet meant she didn’t care or just didn’t notice. It made me think about how we sometimes miss signals when words are not clear.

After class, I told myself not to guess people’s feelings based only on little signs, like a broken machine. Sometimes, silence isn’t about being left out. Maybe it’s just a simple glitch, reminding me that real connection needs more than just heartbeats.
