Last Minutes at the Corner Deli
The clock on the wall ticked closer to five as Jim wiped down the counter for the last time. The quiet hum of the corner deli was interrupted only by the soft chime of the bell whenever a customer came through the door. He looked up to see Mrs. Thompson, a regular, walking in with her usual bright smile.
"Hey, Jim! The usual today?" she asked, sipping her coffee.
"You bet, Mrs. Thompson. One turkey sandwich, coming right up," he replied, forcing a smile. Inside, he felt a weight pressing down—the news about his layoff had come just this morning, but he hadn’t told anyone yet.
As he handed over the sandwich, Mr. Alvarez strolled in, greeting him with a nod. "Heard this place is changing hands soon. You ready for the new management?"
Jim hesitated. "Actually, it’s my last day today. They’re letting me go."
The regulars nodded in understanding, expressing their sadness. Though he was leaving, these moments reminded him of the warmth and community he’d be parting from—a small comfort as he faced the uncertain road ahead.
