Secrets in the Schoolyard
It was recess time, and the playground was loud with kids laughing and playing games. I was sitting quietly when I noticed a small dog near the fence. Suddenly, I heard a voice—not in words, but feelings. The dog was scared and lonely. I blinked, wondering if I imagined it.
Then, some kids came over and started teasing the dog, throwing sticks too close to it. "Hey, stop that!" I said, but they just laughed. My heart raced. I realized I could understand how the dog felt and that I needed to do something.
I took a deep breath and said, "Leave him alone! He's just looking for a friend." Everyone stopped and looked at me. It was the first time I used my new ability openly. The teasing stopped, and one kid even petted the dog gently.
That day, I knew I had a small power to help others. It was scary to speak up, but protecting the dog made me feel brave. From then on, recess was different—I wasn’t just a kid; I was someone who could make a difference.
