Signals in Silence

The bus rattled through the city streets as Mark sat quietly next to Lisa, his usual morning companion at the company’s marketing firm. Their friendship had always been casual—occasional chats, shared projects, nothing too deep. But recently, an odd silence had crept between them that neither seemed willing to break. It all started when Lisa didn’t respond to a message Mark thought was funny, but she apparently took the wrong way.

Mark had sent a joke about their manager’s strict deadlines, hoping to lighten the mood. Instead, Lisa saw it as criticism, and she stopped answering his texts altogether. The cold shoulder felt worse because they still had to work together daily, yet their previous lightness disappeared. Mark fidgeted, unsure if he should bring it up or pretend nothing had happened.

Finally, as the bus slowed near a familiar stop, Mark took a deep breath and said, "Hey, Lisa, can we talk for a minute? About that message I sent—you know, the one you didn’t reply to? I never meant to upset you. I guess it just didn’t land the way I hoped."

Lisa looked at him, surprised but not hostile. "Yeah, I wasn’t sure what you meant. It felt like you were mocking the team, not joking. I should have said something before things got weird."

Mark nodded. "I get that. I should’ve been clearer and maybe checked in with you before sending it. I don’t want this to mess up what we have at work."

They talked for the rest of the trip, clearing up misunderstandings and agreeing to communicate better. The awkward silence began to lift, replaced by a cautious but genuine reconnection. Sometimes, a simple honest conversation is all it takes to repair trust and rebuild friendships—even in the noise and rush of city life.
