The Last Laugh at the Book Club

Every Wednesday evening, the local book club gathered around Cindy's cozy living room, swapping thoughts over tea and pastries. Among them was Leo, known for his sharp tongue and even sharper sarcasm, which often left little room for others' ideas. This time, he took special aim at Emma, the newest member, whose quiet demeanor made her easy to overlook.

"Personally, I think your take on the novel is a bit... naive," Leo sneered when Emma shared her thoughts. The group exchanged uneasy glances, but no one dared challenge him. Emma just smiled faintly, the gears in her mind turning.

Weeks later, the club decided to hold a public reading event at the library. To everyone's surprise, Emma volunteered to organize it. She smoothly assigned Leo to present the opening remarks—a role that required familiarity with the event's schedule and guest speakers.

As the day arrived, Leo struggled, fumbling through notes Emma had subtly kept minimal. His usual confidence wavered under the audience's watchful eyes. Afterwards, Emma approached him quietly, "Maybe next time, a little preparation goes a long way." Leo paused, a reluctant grin breaking through.

That evening, the club acknowledged a shift: Emma's quiet confidence had earned respect, while Leo learned that wit alone doesn't always carry the day. It was small, harmless, but just the right kind of payback.
