The Last Message Before Sleep

Emma was about to log off for the night when she noticed a new message on her phone. It was from Mark, her longtime friend, and the message was oddly familiar yet completely strange. She opened it cautiously — it purported to be from her own account, sent just minutes ago. "Hey, did you send this?" she texted back, a knot forming in her stomach.

Mark replied quickly, sounding confused. "No, I didn’t. That's weird—it says it's from you. What does it say?"

Emma scrolled through the brief message, which was oddly impersonal and out of character. "See? That’s the thing. It doesn’t sound like me at all. It’s kind of vague and off. I think someone might have gotten into my account."

They talked it over, and Emma admitted she hadn’t changed her password in ages. Mark suggested, "You’ll need to update your password right away, and maybe enable two-factor authentication. It’s scary how easy this stuff can be to hack if you’re not careful."

The conversation took a turn, not just about digital security but trust. Emma realized how vulnerable she felt, sharing this breach with Mark made her feel more connected rather than exposed. "Thanks for sticking with me through this mess," she said.

"Of course. That’s what friends are for," Mark responded. Their friendship had faced its own test, revealing more honesty than before — all sparked by one unexpected, last message before sleep.
