The Midnight Ledger Swap

The clock ticked loudly in the dim conference room where Max and Jenna huddled over blueprints of the office. "We can’t wait any longer," Max whispered, eyes darting toward the window. "If we don’t act tonight, that ledger stays locked up, and he keeps laughing at us."

Jenna nodded, tapping her pen nervously on the table. "The annual gala is our only chance. Everyone’s distracted, and security focuses on the party, not the files. But they upgraded the cameras last week. We’ll need a new plan."

Their plan was risky: during the gala’s peak, Jenna would create a distraction by spilling drinks near the main hall. While chaos unfolded, Max would sneak into the secured offices and swap the ledger with a blank copy. As she rehearsed her role, Jenna felt a pang of doubt. "Are we sure this is the right way? What if we get caught?"

Max’s jaw tightened. "We deserve better than this. It’s not just about us—it’s about stopping him from ruining more lives."

When the moment arrived, Jenna triggered the spill. The room erupted in disorder. Max slipped past the security guards, heart pounding, and reached the locked cabinet. To his shock, new biometric locks blocked his access. Time was tight. Thinking fast, he grabbed a phone from a nearby desk to call Jenna. "They’ve upgraded everything," he hissed. "Can you find that master key we saw last week?"

Jenna rushed upstairs, slipping the keycard into her clutch. Moments later, Max opened the cabinet, swapped the files, and vanished into the crowd. They escaped unscathed, but as they left, Jenna wondered if their careers would ever recover from the night’s peril—and if betrayal was a price worth paying for justice.
