The Typist’s Breakthrough
In 1923, in New York City, Mary worked as a typist at a busy law office. The office had just installed one of the first commercial typewriters. Mary was excited but her male coworkers said, "Typing is easy for a woman, but you will not get faster than us."
Mary practiced every day. She learned to type fast and with few mistakes. One day, her speed was better than all others in the office. Her boss said, "Mary, you are doing a great job. We will give you a better position."
Mary smiled. She knew that by using new technology, she could improve her skills. Even in 1920s America, women could show their strength at work. This was the start of her career.
